I spent a lot of my childhood helping my parents in the garden (sometimes voluntarily, most times not!) and hanging around the plant nursery which my Dad managed. Having grown up in a family of gardeners and horticulturists, it was inevitable that I would wind up being a keen grower myself.
When researching florists for my wedding in 2023, I came across a local flower farmer who focused on sustainable, eco-friendly and ethical practices. I've always been keen on living sustainably and so found it amazing to learn more about the British flower industry from this perspective. I was shocked to learn how far supermarket flowers travel and realised that I wanted to do my own little bit to help.
Flash forward to the end of 2024 after selling our little end-terrace house in South Wales. There were a lot of criteria for our new house - must have a roof, must be habitable (we're also DIY enthusiasts but not miracle-workers!). But the biggest criteria was to have plenty of outside space for my to start growing cutting flowers.
When the opportunity came up to buy a house that had an acre of land, I realised that I could do more than just grow a few cut flowers for myself and for friends and family. I realised that I could jump in at the deep end (a bad habit of mine!) and join with fellow British flower farmers to champion sustainability in an industry that is so close to many people's hearts.
I am so blessed to have the opportunity to set up my own flower farm and look forward to 2025 being our first year of growing
So join me on the journey as I turn what was once your average agricultural field into a field of flowers!
